Maggie O’Farrell is the much-loved author of nine novels, including Hamnet, which won the Women’s Prize for Fiction 2020, Her breath-taking new novel is a dazzling evocation of the Italian Renaissance in all its beauty and brutality.

In the stunning setting of Alnwick Gardens in Northumbria, Maggie O’Farrell will be in conversation with Claire Malcolm of New Writing North discussing the inspiration behind her beautiful novel, The Marriage Proposal. Hear what she discovered about the real Lucrezia de’ Medici during her research as she sheds new light on a familiar story.

In The Marriage Portrait, Maggie O’Farrell breathes life into Lucrezia de’ Medici, Duchess of Ferrara, immortalised in Robert Browning’s celebrated poem ‘My Last Duchess’. Taking the painting in Browning’s poem as her focal point, Maggie conjures a spirited, intelligent, creative young woman, provides her with a voice previously stolen by men, and imagines how she might have met her fate.
